ORANGE SKYLINE

Het is snel gegaan met Orange Skyline, vooral de afgelopen paar jaar. Tijdens de treinreis na afloop van een show van Oasis in Amsterdam wordt Orange Skyline opgericht door broers Stefan (zang) en Niels van der Wielen (gitaar) en buurjongen Mart Atema (drums). Stefan: ?Het optreden had een overweldigende indruk gemaakt. Oasis straalde een enorme kracht uit, terwijl de leden er tegelijkertijd uitzagen als heel gewone gasten. Zo?n coole band wilden we zelf ook zijn.?

Orange Skyline wordt gecompleteerd door Simon Christiaanse (bas) al veel langer een vriend van de drie. De ambitie is ruimschoots aanwezig, de noodzakelijke speltechniek nog niet. Het wordt opgelost door YouTube filmpjes te bestuderen waarin de elementaire muzikale beginselen uit de doeken gedaan worden. Na deze spoedcursus maakt Orange Skyline snel naam. Eerst op kleine podia en bescheiden feesten, later in grote zalen en op belangrijke festivals.
Als Orange Skyline in 2015 de single ?I Don?t Mind? uitbrengt tijdens het Eurosonic/Noorderslag weekend gaat het snel. De combinatie van catchy songs en een tomeloze werklust bezorgt de band een plek op het affiche van festivals als Concert At Sea en Parkpop. Tijdens de uitverkochte optredens van Kensington in de Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam schittert Orange Skyline in het voorprogramma. Het viertal is daarnaast te zien in De Wereld Draait Door, toert onder de vlag van 3FM Serious Talent en wordt genomineerd voor een Edison in de categorie ?Beste Rock 2016?.

Onder een beter gesternte kan het debuutalbum Things That I Hide dan ook niet uitkomen.

Op de eerste singles en het mini-album An Introduction ontpopt Orange Skyline zich nog als een typische gitaarband, waar de invloeden in doorklinken van groepen als The Kinks, Oasis, The Libertines en Arctic Monkeys. Op het debuutalbum Things That I Hide heet het geluid nog veel meer kleur gekregen, vooral door de grotere rol voor elektronica. ?Het is het logisch gevolg van de muziek waar we onszelf aan blootstellen?, vertelt Stefan van der Wielen. ?We luisteren niet langer alleen naar bandjesmuziek, maar zijn ook erg onder de indruk van meer beat-driven werk zoals dat bijvoorbeeld gemaakt wordt door Daft Punk, Drake en Kanye West.?

De band vond de ideale producer in de persoon van Oscar de Jong van Kraak & Smaak. Niels van der Wielen leert hem kennen tijdens een gastcollege op het conservatorium waarbij hij een topline moet componeren ? een song op basis van een bestaand ritme. Die samenwerking verkoopt zo goed dat Orange Skyline hem benadert om het zo belangrijke debuutalbum op te nemen.

Niels: ?Wij zetten een stap in een andere richting en hij wilde graag met ons aan de slag. Ideaal omdat de sound van Kraak en Smaak zulke lekkere beats heeft?. Oscar: ?Alles klopte. Er was meteen een klik, goede demo?s. Reden om onszelf helemaal in het diepe te gooien voor bijna een half jaar. Het resultaat is bijzonder en zeker geslaagd.?

Dat valt te herleiden uit het eerste wapenfeit van het album, single Sound & Fury. Dat in de week na de release 3FM Megahit wordt.

De ambitie van Orange Skyline is groot. Natuurlijk wil de band de wereld veroveren. Pinkpop, Lowlands? het zou fantastisch zijn om daar te kunnen spelen. Net zoals er op een onbewaakt moment wel eens van gedroomd wordt om in de Ziggo-voetsporen van Kensington te treden.

First on small stages and rapidly working their way up to supporting Kaiser Chiefs and opening main stages for local festivals.

When Orange Skyline releases their 2015 single ?I Don?t Mind? during the Eurosonic/Noorderslag festival the pace kicks in. The combination of catchy but edgy songs and their constant drive to outdo themselves make sure that Orange Skyline find their way to festivals such as Concert at Sea and Parkpop. Topping their 2015 tour dates is the support for two sold out Ziggo Dome shows of Kensington. All in all Orange Skyline performs over 40 festivals in the Netherlands alone, make tours supported by national radio station 3FM and get nominated for an Edison award, category ?Best Rock 2016?.

In particular because the band gives more room to electronic influences. ?It is actually a logic effect of our own exposure to other genres of music?, says Stefan van der Wielen. ?We also have been listening to more beat-driven songs by artist such as Daft Punk, Drake and Kanye West.?

Having this beat-driven idea into their songs, Orange Skyline found the ideal producer in Kraak & Smaak?s Oscar de Jong. Niels van der Wielen gets to know Oscar during a guest lecture at his conservatory in which he is assigned to compose a top-line for the producer. That collaboration turns to be such a good collaboration that the two decide to work together for ?Things That I Hide?.

Niels: ?We wanted to take another direction and he really wanted to work with us in that. It was the best fit we could imagine, because we love the beats from Kraak & Smaak?. Oscar: ?Everything fits. From the get-go there was a good chemistry between both parties and the demo?s sounded amazing. Plenty of reason to plunge ourselves into almost half a year of writing, producing and recording. The result is so special and by all means a good result.?
