Met LUWTEN geeft Tessa Douwstra zich eindelijk de ruimte die ze nodig heeft. Weg van druk en drukte. Op zoek naar de ultieme plek waar het enkel draait om de noodzaak ’s avonds iets te hebben gecreëerd wat er die ochtend nog niet was.

De muziek van LUWTEN gaat over het blokje om dat je soms nodig hebt om je hoofd leeg te lopen. Om ruimte te maken om overeenkomsten en verschillen scherper te zien. Douwstra maakt zich sterk voor de verlegen mens. Voor degene die het lef heeft sommige dingen niet te durven. Die liever afwacht en op eigen tempo afweegt wat hij of zij zelf wil.

Het debuutalbum van LUWTEN verschijnt op 13 oktober. Hiervoor werkte Douwstra samen met percussionist en producer Frank Wienk (BINKBEATS). Dat het totale maakproces uiteindelijk een periode van ruim twee jaar overspant is terug te vinden in de detailverliefdheid die de plaat kenmerkt. Een uit de verte opdoemend ruisje, een vocoder, een catchy refrein, een uitgesponnen piano-intro en dat alles rondom Douwstra’s kenmerkende stem.

Zo er al een doel was, dan was dat om geen rekening te houden met de buitenwereld, plezier te hebben en de tijd te nemen. Bijkomend voordeel was dat daarmee het moment werd uitgesteld waarop de muzikante weer gaat doen waar ze misschien wel evenveel van houdt als tegenop ziet: het podium op.

The maxim for LUWTEN, Tessa Douwstra's creative conduit, is a simple one: space is the place. Well, maybe not outer space specifically, but a space unburdened by the strain of ones surroundings. A place where only one thing truly matters: the desire to create something that didn't exist yesterday.

LUWTEN's music encapsulates that much-needed stroll around the block to clear your mind. A tranquil space to properly arrange perceptions of difference and similarity. Through her songs, Douwstra emboldens the shy person who musters the courage to withdraw. The person who'd rather consider all interactions, choices and dreams at his or her own desired pace.

On October 13, LUWTEN's self-titled debut LP will see the light. During the album's writing and recording process, Douwstra found a rewarding collaborator in percussionist and producer Frank Wienk (BINKBEATS). The album's supple, meticulous compositions are the result of two full years of exploring sounds, feeling ones way in the dark and unfurling elemental, once-veiled emotions to their bare essence. Douwstra's voice radiates like a human source of warmth amidst the music's glacial, free-flowing machinery. If by design this collection songs has a purpose, it is to remind oneself to enjoy and cherish your natural state in isolation,
without influence from the outside world. And congruently, delaying the very act that both hampers and fuels Douwstra's intrinsic enthusiasm and urgency to create: to walk back on that stage.
