ALAMO RACE TRACK

Als er één Nederlands platenlabel een patent genomen lijkt te hebben op het uitbrengen van alleen maar fantastische groepen, dan is het wel Excelsior Recordings. Een hoop heerlijke Nederlandse bands vonden bij die maatschappij onderdak, van Daryll-Ann tot Spinvis. Ook het Amsterdamse Alamo Race Track maakt deel uit van de Excelsior-stal.
Op hun twee cd’s, ‘Birds at Home’ en ‘Black Cat John Brown’, vermengen ze zo ongeveer alles wat er de voorbije vijftig jaar in de geschiedenis van de rock gebeurd is: Beatles, Beach Boys, Gary Glitter en Talking Heads. Het titelnummer van hun laatste plaat, ‘Black Cat John Brown’, werd een hit op You Tube; in een week werd het filmpje door een kwartmiljoen surfers bekeken.

S'il est un label aux Pays-Bas qui semble avoir trouvé la formule magique pour dénicher des groupes fantastiques, c'est bien Excelsior Recordings. De Daryll-Ann à Spinvis, toute une série de groupes hollandais ô combien talentueux ont trouvé refuge dans cette maison de disques. Alamo Race Track, d'Amsterdam, font eux aussi partie de l'écurie Excelsior. Leurs 2 CD, ‘Birds at Home’ et ‘Black Cat John Brown’, intègrent à peu près tout ce qui s'est fait dans l'histoire du rock de ces 50 dernières années: Beatles, Beach Boys, Gary Glitter ou Talking Heads. Le morceau-titre de leur dernier album, ‘Black Cat John Brown’, a été un 'hot hit' sur You Tube; en une semaine, le clip a été vu par 250.000 surfeurs enthousiastes. Depuis lors, le succès du groupe s'est étendu à l'international; l'album est sorti en France sur Fargo Records et aux Etats-Unis sur Minty Fresh Records.

The end of 2010 saw Alamo Race Track putting the finishing touches to their new LP – entitled Unicorn Loves Dear. This will be rolled out to the general public in March 2011, and will be the result of both a revamped line-up (new member in the shape of drummer Robin Buijs) and a determination not to rest on the laurels of their last LP, 2006’s Black Cat John Brown; a record which cemented ART’s reputation as masterful purveyors of multidimensional pop.

It's been said before that Alamo Race Track are adept at drawing on multiple sources to in form their sound. A new song off the record, Hypnotised, - recorded for webzine De Speech - shows how ART are masters at putting a simple melody through hit spaces -courtesy of two versions of this song, a “Day” and “Night” version no less… If this snippet is anything to go by, the band seems to be toying with a Midwest sound, what with dreamy paeans to Moon & Sun, and vocal harmonics that are balancedagainstgentleinstrumentaldescendsandcarefullybalancedcadences. Now and again the listener also gets a feeling that a raucous campfire sing-along is just about to break out; a trick that the band have always been brilliant at conjuring up. ART’s soulful melancholy is very noticeable too: the night version of Hypnotised seems to nod to the dreamier work of Mercury Rev, and at times, this writer was wondering where he’d put his copy of Harvest. Not long to wait now…
